 Activity Report: Bangladesh
HFW Bangladesh is running projects in 40 villages in 3 districts. Women, youth, government officers, and other NGOs are all giving strong support. “\1 from Japan will give 15 taka” is the catchphrase among the people of the community. Their projects are also widely covered by newspaper + TV in Bangladesh.

■ Report
Implementation of an all-project evaluation program.
Separated into groups, villagers draw pictures of their villages in the past and in the present on large sheets of paper.
Separated into groups, villagers draw pictures of their villages in the past and in the present on large sheets of paper.

A program was implemented to evaluate all of the projects carried out by HFW in Bangladesh since 2001. The program was carried out in each village in the three areas in which HFW has supported projects. In total there were 1121 participants from WEH, YEH, and members of the agricultural development council all of them people who are both the targets of aid and the primary organizers and implementers of aid projects. They exchanged ideas, and each drew pictures of their village before and after HFW’s projects were implemented. They analyzed the various changes, and discussed the projects’ good points, bad points, and things that could be improved.

The residents in all three areas agreed that the spread of toilets and the increase in self confidence among women through the activities of WEH were great successes.

Problem areas where improvement was needed were singled out as inadequate training in how to farm without pesticides (and ensuing crop damage) and some people not understanding the way in which targets of aid were chosen.

The results of this evaluation program will now be used to rethink our strategy and to implement more effective projects in the future. (2006.5)

Message from Bangladesh
“In the past, when my husband or father said that he was going to attend a meeting I could only imagine what sort of things went on there. Now I also actively participate in meetings and training. I am even involved in the decision making process for things that affect the village. I am really happy to be able to do these things, and I am grateful to HFW. (Monowara Begum, a woman from Boda)
