Activity Report: Bangladesh
HFW Bangladesh is running projects in 40 villages in 3 districts. Women, youth, government officers, and other NGOs are all giving strong support. “\1 from Japan will give 15 taka” is the catchphrase among the people of the community. Their projects are also widely covered by newspaper + TV in Bangladesh.
■ Report
Emergency aid to cold wave victims completed.
In January 2003, 700 Blankets and 100 winter clothing were distributed to the victims of the cold wave. Since the end of 2002, the damage in Bangladesh was worse than ever, many died by freezing and thousands have been hospitalized. For the last three years HFW has provided this emergency aid, combined with parades calling for awareness on nutritional improvement and anti-drugs. These programs gained a positive response from the public, local government and the mass media. Active local volunteers joined the HFW team in the projects and fundraising. The local staff was invaluable for selecting recipients who were in real need, and thereby ensuring that the limited fund was used efficiently.
Regional Activities in Three Thanas (Counties)
BODA: 250 blankets were distributed in Noya Dhighi village; the parade calling for awareness on nutritional improvement was joined by 2000 people from 6 villages. /KALIGANJ: 250 blankets were distributed in 10 villages. Drug use among youth is the serious issue in the region. The anti-drug rally which was joined by many young people was very successful. Local officials, NGOs and women’s groups were mobilized in the parade. /BHANGA: 200 blankets and 100 articles of winter clothing were distributed. A rally was also held calling for the purification of arsenic polluted water.（2004.9）
