Activity Report: Bangladesh
■ Report
Despite the existence of a system of compulsory education, the literacy rate in Kaligonji County and Boda County is less than 33%. This is owing to an educational environment such that students cannot focus on their studies and a high dropout rate. The walls and ceilings of many of the school buildings are falling apart or there is a shortage of desks and chairs. As a result, children must stand during lessons, and there is little protection from rain, wind and the fierce sunlight, making for less than ideal conditions for learning. Toilets are also few, creating physical and mental stress for children, especially girls. It was in such schools that HFW implemented an educational environment improvement project. The 39 target schools were selected on the basis of the level of disrepair of facilities and the number of students, among other criteria. HFW staff visited schools and, during discussions, decisions on improvements were made. Responding to such needs as insufficient classroom furniture and equipment or broken-down walls, HFW proceeded to create a school setting where children could learn free from worry. This project was not only well-received by teachers and students alike, but parents’ interest in their children’s education also increased, leading to improved attendance.(2008.7)
