A year long agriculture project conducted jointly by Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and HFW ended in December 2004. Through this project, one hundred residents in 10 villages of Kaliganji and Boda Thanas were supplied with necessary equipment along with guidance on honey production, so they could start bee-keeping with earn inicome.
HFW promoted nutritional values of honey and introduced cooking recipes using honey through posters and events in order to expand honey product market. HFW also started to purchase honey from apiary workers for the children’s nutritional improvement projects. It also promoted information exchanges among honey producers and assisted in establishing funds that operate saved profits from bee businesses.
Throughout the program, honey taken from the total 180 beehives amounted to 1,260 kilograms, some of which were consumed at producers’ homes and were sold. As a result, the total earnings that the apiary workers made reached 198,000 Taka ( as approximately 396,000 yen), out of which 15,000 Taka (about 30,000 yen) were saved. Some media reported the success stories, that it said drove more than 20 people to start self-owned apiculture across the country.
The joint project with FAO is over, but the honey producers wanted continued support and HFW will keep on assisting their business for another two years. (2005.7)

Mr. Zaheed Hosai,
Satovaria village, Kaligonji Thana, Jhenaidah District
I started keeping bees using three hives. Other apiary workers and I see apiculture experts in meetings held twice a month by HFW, and receive trainings targeting honey producers.
In January, when I started the business, I collected 8-kilogram honey. I sold it and bought another 12 hives, and got 105 kilograms in November and December of 2004. Now I have bought the kind of bees that collect more honeydew, and put the hives beside plants that are suitable for apiculture. I expect there will be honey yield of 200 kilograms or so in the period of January to March 2005.
Beekeeping is my real vocation. Newspaper reporters came to me for coverage of my work, whose success story penetrated all over the country. I have a dream of owning a bee farm with a hundred hives. |
