Activity Report: Bangladesh
■
Report
Every year Bangladesh suffers severe damage from natural disasters such as floods and cyclones. Since the year 2000, HFW has been undertaking reforestation projects in each of the villages it is involved in. Forests not only help prevent natural disasters, but they also retain moisture, create oxygen, and protect a great variety of birds and insects. With the improvement of residents’ nutrition and the reduction of medical costs in mind, a total of 4,034 trees that bear fruit or can be used for medicinal purposes such as mango, lychee, guava, lemon, coconut, neem, etc were planted. In 2004 a “Village Reforestation Commemoration Day” was designated in each of the villages and has been celebrated since then. Village HFW volunteers planned lively festivals. At the festivals held in June and July 2007 in each village, residents and government officials gave speeches underlining the importance of the environment, after which attendees then all dug holes for the seedlings, installed enclosures for their protection, and watered the new plantings. During these eight years, the awareness of residents toward reforestation has been growing steadily. In fact, this year, some residents were observed teaching others how to protect the seedlings by spreading cow dung on their leaves and branches. Following the plantings, in September seminars were held in each village on agroforestry, farming done in the forests using the addition of living organisms.
