"WAGOWEPI"is selected as our area of operations as a result of Participatory Rural Appraisal
Between January and February of 2006 Participatory rural appraisal was carried out in Koubri, where HFW has been running a program to improve the nutrition of infants and mothers since 2005. The purpose of the appraisal was to allow us to better understand the needs of the local population and to assess the area's resources in preparation for the start of new projects.
The survey covered four villages: Wamtinga, Gomtoaga, Wedbila, Pissi. These villages were selected from among the those in the area in which participants in the health center's nutrition program live based on their having been assessed as being the poorest in the region by the local government.
Among other things the survey showed that there are many people who live too far from the health center to take advantage of it and that many residents have difficulty getting enough to eat, especially in the dry season when sources of income are reduced.
With the participation of the local residents we also created a five-year plan to eradicate hunger in the region. Proposals included improving agricultural efficiency through irrigation and field reorganization and programs to raise awareness about ending hunger through literacy education.
We plan to continue gathering information and to plan new projects in the future.
