Construction of the primary school that was completed in August 2005 in Lwemwedde village, Tumbaali Lwemwedde Parish.
While the Tumbaali Lwemwedde Parish lies near the capital, its infrastructure has not recovered following destruction caused by civil war in the 1980s. There are no government primary schools, and out of a population of 2400 only 55% of women and 43% of men can read and write. In 2000 a group of resident volunteers, many of whom were young people, built a shack and began to educate around 50 children. The shack had only two rooms, however, and desks, chairs and textbooks were lacking. The crude construction of the shack also meant that classes had to be canceled when it rained.
HFW built a school with seven classrooms, a staff room and a principle's office, and began providing resources for desks and chairs. Area residents actively contributed to the construction effort, donating land and providing food and lodging for the laborers from the construction company. In an expression of gratitude to the Nagoya Mizuho Rotary Club for providing funding, when the building was completed the residents named it the “Nagoya Mizuho RC Memorial Primary School”.
On August fourth members from the Nagoya Mizuho Rotary Club and a study-tour group from Japan participated in a completion ceremony. The minister of education for Wakiso District, who was present at the ceremony, gave a public commitment to make it an officially recognized government primary school as soon as the application could be processed. Once this recognition is obtained, students will be able to attend without paying tuition, and certified teachers will be sent by the government. (2005.12)
[The cost for construction and furnishing the Nagoya Mizuho RC memorial primary school was roughly 3,180,000 Japanese Yen]
