Fields in Uganda are often not weeded, and grass grows in abundance. |
Vegetable cultivation projects being planned by the Uganda branches of HFW’s women’s group WEH (Women Ending Hunger) and youth group YEH (Youth Ending Hunger) both got underway in November of 2005 in the region of Kabumba.? Both WEH and YEH had been planning and conducting training since the beginning of 2005, but due to the weather implementation of the project was delayed.
WEH had also been planning to cultivate sunflowers, but due to disease the sale of seeds was banned and the plan was changed. In order to provide the women with income until seeds become available, and in order to create nitrogen-rich soil suitable for growing sunflowers, it was decided to begin by cultivating cow peas.
The WEH project had 200 participants, the YEH 40. The goal is for these participants to earn an income by selling harvested crops in the marketplace.(2006.02)
