Vegetable cultivation projects implemented by our youth organization “Youth Ending Hunger” (YEH) and women’s organization “Women Ending Hunger” (WEH) in the Kabumba “Hunger Free Zone (HFZ)” (a HFZ is an area in which HFW is active) were successfully completed. These projects, in which WEH cultivated cowpeas and YEH cultivated cow peas and tomatoes, ran from July 2005 to September 2006. While a drought that continued throughout January caused concern about the harvest, in the end both projects managed to increase profits.

The roughly 400 youths and women who participated were all able to receive an income as a result of the projects. And by using their newly acquired farming techniques these participants have also been able to continue to cultivate vegetables to be sold in markets for a profit after the projects ended. Currently both YEH and WEH continue to make progress on preparations for the creation of a cooperative organization for participants in the projects.

A “seed bank” was also created using the 50kg of seeds collected by each project. These seeds can be used in the future to start cultivation projects in other HFZs. (2007.04)
