Trying to pound yams during the Kagurazaka Charity Night. In total 1,120 yen was raised at the night.

A mallet and a mortar of Western African origin. Pounding up and down in perfect vertical form all the time is a big difference from the Japanese style.

Kagurazaka’s African restaurant, “Tribes” hosted this month’s Charity Night, in which 20 yen out of every meal and drink (all 500 yen) go towards the donations, and 20 people joined in the event on January 11th.

The theme was ‘Try to pound yams-food culture of Western Africa’.Babel P.K. who studies yams in Tokyo University of Agriculture, was invited as a speaker of the night, explaining that yams in Western and Central Africa are central to its culture just as rice is in Japan. The participants munched delicious yam dishes while listening to the interesting food stories. African-style mallet and mortar were brought thanks to Japenese mortar artisans and pounding was demonstrated by the participants.

In total 1,120 yen was raised at the night will contribute to relief works by HFW and a NGO Green Sahel.
